French restaurants legally include service in the menu prices, marked on bills as 'service compris' (service included). This is not optional; French law (since 1985) requires it. Tipping in France is therefore additional and modest, more of a thank-you gesture than the structural part of compensation it is in the US. Standard practice: leave €1 to €5 in cash for casual restaurants, 5 to 10 percent for upscale meals where service was exceptional. Coffee at a cafe: leave the small change after paying. As in Italy, French servers earn a livable base salary plus benefits (health care, paid vacation), so the social pressure for tipping is much lower than in the US.
